| At the heart of the Shekinah experience are the Core Members-men and women with developmental and physical disabilities. Core Members live in one of our four homes where each has his or her own room. There are usually two to five Core Members living in a house, along with
two Live-in Assistants. Shekinah Homes Society is home to fourteen Core Members and seven Live-in Assistants who have come from all over the world to share a year or more of their lives with us. The seven members of our permanent staff have been here from 1 to 19 years, providing stability and a strong sense of continuity for Core Members as well as excellent training for new Live-in
new Assistants .
Shekinah Homes Society supports people with a variety of developmental disabilities. Once welcomed, it is assumed that Shekinah Homes Society will be home for most of one's life. Our oldest community member is
over
60! It is also understood that if Core Members need change the Shekinah community rallies together to meet their needs.
The rhythm of weekday activities revolves around participation in cooperative, therapeutic, productive tasks. Assistants and Core Members work side by side in our homes and sometimes on community projects.
When the busiest part of the day winds down, community members have the opportunity to participate in sports, dance, fitness, yoga or music. Later in the day people return home to help prepare dinner, catch up on the news, or rest. Evenings are spent visiting with friends, watching TV, attending dances, or pursuing other hobbies. Each week the whole community gathers in the evening to celebrate togetherness and pray in fellowship.
There are many excellent doctors, nurses, psychiatrists, neurologists and therapists in the Victoria area. We work to ensure the health, safety and well being of each of our community members while in residence at Shekinah Homes.
Shekinah Homes are licensed under the Community Care Facility Act in the Province of British Columbia . Our staff and Assistants are required to have training which best supports the Core Members.
We offer a secure, wholesome, and friendly environment. Community members experience the warmth and intimacy of home life and the opportunity to develop lasting friendships in a setting that values interdependence, mutual respect, and creativity. We welcome and encourage family members' visits. The best way to understand our community is to come for a visit! If you plan to be in the area, please call to arrange a time to attend a prayer or community night. If you would like more information please call our office at (250) 595-1014. |
